Green Valley Oil Services and Nijhuis Industries have finalised the updated requirements for the construction and operation of a new treatment plant for the collective treatment of industrial waste water from the southern industrial zone of Port Said, Egypt.

Dutch water technology supplier Nijhuis Industries, that will built and operate the new plant, announced in a recent project update, to commence procurement of the major parts for the installation in July.

By July next year the plant is expected to treat 35,000 m3 waste water daily, and by 2020 it will have its full capacity of 60,000 m3 daily. This makes the plant one of the biggest in the world for the treatment of industrial waste water.

Two-staged construction
It has been decided to build the treatment plant in two phases of each 35,000 m3 per day. For the first phase the plant is to incorporate Nijhuis drum screen filtration and high rate i-DAF dissolved air flotation, followed by Nijhuis Bioctor aerobic treatment.

During the second phase, the plant is to be extended to a capacity to 60,000 m3/day including Nijhuis anaerobic biological treatment, sludge digestion & biogas treatment.

The biogas will be used to feed gas engines to produce power and become energy neutral.

Multidisciplinary project team
In close cooperation with GVOS, a multidisciplinary project team has been formed with 40 engineers from Nijhuis Industries, consultancy firm Witteveen+Bos and key suppliers.

Supporting pilot plant trials were conducted on the actual wastewater in the Industrial Zone of Port Said.  These trials confirmed the original design, and resulted in an improved scope distribution over the project’s two phases.

Weak soil conditions
Additional examination of the soil conditions by geotechnical consultant Fugro proved that the soil conditions were weaker than expected. With the support of the Dutch civil-engineering and foundation expert ABT several foundation options have been evaluated and tested to overcome the very weak soil conditions in Port Said.
