Aquatech/IWW: wide interest in Second National Delta Conference

November 18th, 2011 by nwp

As part of the Aquatech/International Water Week, the Amsterdam RAI Convention Centre hosted the Second National Delta Conference on November 3. More than 1200 national and international water sector representatives gathered to discuss water safety and freshwater supply issues.

Unique approach
“Our approach to the new Delta Plan, which provides solutions for flooding and dry spells both now and in the future, is unique. In addition, our new Delta Plan, the Delta Programme, offers opportunities for the Water Top Sector. The water sector is incredibly important for the innovative strength of the Dutch economy. It is an export product pur sang”, said Delta Commissioner Wim Kuijken in his opening speech.

Delta act adopted by parlement
State Secretary Joop Atsma looked back on the results achieved in the past year. He specifically mentioned the adoption of the Delta Act by the House of Representatives and the Administrative Agreement on Water Affairs that the government has reached with the provinces, municipalities, water boards and drinking water companies.

Safeguarding fresh water
The Administrative Agreement secures the funding for the second Flood Protection Programme, which aims to bring our dikes and dunes up to standard. State secretary Atsma: “In addition to water safety, safeguarding our freshwater supply must also remain high on our agenda. The dry spell earlier this year illustrates that we cannot take a sufficient supply of freshwater for granted. Water safety and freshwater security are our themes for the future.”

Large number of attendants
Delta Commissioner Wim Kuijken declared the conference a huge success: “The presence of the Prime Minister and the State Secretary, the large number of attendants, their commitment and the enthusiasm displayed in the discussions on the Delta Programme clearly demonstrate that everyone appreciates the urgency of the issues we are working on: protecting our country from flooding and securing our freshwater supply, now and in the future.”

Aquatech/IWW: industrial leaders ask water sector to open up

November 18th, 2011 by nwp

To be able to make their water use sustainable, the international operating industries are aware that radical changes are needed. That was put forward by the captains of industry of DSM, Shell and Unilever during the Industrial Leaders Forum in Amsterdam at the Aquatech/International Water Week on November 3.

One of the largest users of water
The industry is globally one of the largest users of water. Companies and their leaders need to take responsibility for a sustainable world and reduce their waterfootprint, but at the same time taking advantage of business opportunities.

This was the central theme of the dialogue organized between representatives of the international operating industry and the water sector.

The aim was to challenge the water sector to innovate and developing a road map to identify crucial necessary advances.

New products with less water demand
The forum made clear that the industry is especially interesting in new products that use less water in the whole product life cycle. They prefer investments in new products that lead to growth. This message is better understood in the board rooms of the multinationals, than the request for investments in costly water treatment installations.

As Robert Claasen director corporate manufacturing of the chemical company DSM said to the forum: “So far it has been easy by being more efficient with water at our production plants. But to be able to keep operating in the future we shall have to redesign the whole value chain of our products”.

As an example Claasen mentioned the special enzyme his company produces for breweries. “A new way of thinking is to produce a new enzyme that enables the brewers to use less water for producing their beer.”

Industrial water market is already changing
Also participating in the forum on behalf of the water sector were the directors of Arcadis (water division), Amiad and DOW. Surprisingly they already notice considerable changes amongst their industrial clients.

While the CEO’s of the multinationals are talking in their board rooms about totally new product concepts, locally the demand on the industrial water treatment market is already changing.

Serious about sustainability
“The last five years we have seen a tremendous change”, explained Snehai Desai, global marketing director of DOW water & process solutions. The industry started to take sustainability very serious and instead of demanding equipment only, it now asks for eco services.”

According to Desai the change is especially noticeable in areas where the water problems are most felt. “People are no longer waiting for the government to decide on water investments. In burning places the locals take action and start to implement innovative water technologies. They don’t spend long discussion about optimal solutions. They go for the good, not the perfect”, said Desai of DOW.

Initiator and chairman of the forum, Menno Holterman of the Netherlands Water Technology Innovation Board, ended the forum by inviting the members to come back to Amsterdam for the next Aquatech/International Water Week in November 2013 and report on their progress on the collaboration with all stake holders in the water chain.

Participating in the industrial leaders panel:
Robert Claasen, Royal DSM, global manufacturing director
Gerald Schotman, Royal Dutch Shell, executive vice president innovation
Daan Dijk, Rabobank, managing director sustainable business development
Hans Droge, Unilever, senior vice president research development

Participating in the water industry panel:
Bill Dee, Arcadis, global director water
Snehal Desai, Dow Water Process Solutions, global marketing director
Arik Dayan, Amiad Filtration Systems, chief executive officer

Aquaterra & Dutch Delta Congress: no panacea for adaptive water management in world’s large deltas

October 27th, 2011 by nwp

Aquaterra 2011 and the 2nd Dutch Delta Congress will focus on the risk management of and new possibilities for the development of delta and coastal areas, approaching the issues from all angles – from economic and financial aspects to safety and planning. Over 700 experts from all over the world will gather in Amsterdam for three days to exchange their experiences.

Aquaterra – world forum on delta & coastal development (1-2 november)
The expected climate change will have great effects on the densely populated low lying delta areas around the world. At the third Aquaterra 2011 conference this effects will be discussed by experts from different delta areas discuss. Deltas are characterized by their complicated water systems – the place where the fresh water of rivers meets the salt water of sea, the low and high tides, the continuously moving shorelines and sedimentation. The Aquaterra 2011 will take place on Tuesday 1 and Wednesday 2 November in Amsterdam.

No panacea – customize approaches
With the likely effects of climate change still to come and the foreseen growth of coastal cities, the strain on the dynamic natural system will sharply increase. There is no panacea for the problems of deltas. On the contrary – the number of studies on climate change and climate adaptation is still increasing and the results are far from univocal. The matter is complex and solutions require customized approaches, while experts are increasingly expected to predict consequences and find ways to avoid negative impacts.

Regional cases
As with previous editions of Aquaterra, a number of deltas were selected for experts to discuss in concrete terms, allowing them to learn from each other’s approach. New on the programme this year is the Danube. This year the regional cases are:

  • Mississippi, New Orleans (US)
  • Rhine/Meuse, Rotterdam (Netherlands)
  • Ciliwung, Jakarta (Indonesia)
  • Ganges/Brahmaputra/Meghna (Bangladesh & India)
  • Danube (Europe)
  • Incomati/Zambezi , Beira (Mozambique)
  • Mekong, Ho Chi Minh (Vietnam)
  • Nile (Egypt)
  • California Bay (US)

Dutch Delta Congress – (3 November)
The Second Dutch Delta Congress will take place on Thursday 3 November during the International Water Week in Amsterdam. Government Commissioner for the Dutch Delta Programme, Wim Kuijken, has taken the initiative for this congress, which will focus on the Delta Programme 2012. Special attention will be given to the various individual Delta programmes, showcasing the Dutch expertise on water management in all it facets.

The congress will start with prominent keynote speakers reflecting on the focus and current dynamic of the Delta Programme from a broad perspective. Prime Minister Mark Rutte and State Secretary Joop Atsma of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment are attending the congress.

The aim of the Dutch Delta Programme – a new Delta Plan – is to protect the country from high water now and in the future, and to secure the fresh-water supply. The programme seeks a new way of planning, which is called adaptive delta planning. It seeks to maximise flexibility; keeping options open and avoiding ‘lock-in’. In the meantime, the so-called delta decisions are prepared in order to be able to take the necessary measures if the current water system reaches its limits.

The whole national climate adaptation plan is based on the 5 Dutch D’s:

  • Delta Act
  • Delta Programme
  • Delta Fund
  • Delta Commissioner
  • Delta Decisions

During the congress various discussions will take place on subjects including water safety, the freshwater supply and drought, and adaptive delta management. Also part of the congress is the Delta Parade, an exhibition on the nine projects that form the Delta programme. The exhibition shows what the Delta Programme stands for and what the current state of affairs is.

Aquatech China: more timely and relevant than ever before

June 3rd, 2011 by nwp

SHANGHAI, June 3 (Xinhua) — A lingering drought in central and southern China and water shortages in other parts of the nation made Aquatech China, an international fair that was recently held in Shanghai, more timely and relevant than ever before.
Around 800 businesses from all over the world, including big names like BASF, General Electric (GE) and Siemens, participated in the three-day event, which concluded on Friday.

“Seawater desalination is expected to become an effective approach for China’s coastal cities to fight water shortage,” said Lu Junjun, a client manager with the Dow Chemical (China) Investment Company.

Lu cited a seawater desalination project in the eastern city of Qingdao and a similar project in north China’s Hebei Province.

According to Lu, seawater desalination has yet to claim a foothold in China, as the United States and European nations have desalination technology that is much more advanced than China’s.

Regardless, seawater desalination is ineffective in combating droughts, meaning that the efficient use of water still poses a problem for many developing countries, according to Kelvin Lau, a regional manager with GE Infrastructure.

Lu said that the combination of desalination and sewage treatment is a better solution for easing water shortages in China’s rural areas.

Litree, a water purification company based in south China’s Hainan Province, showcased its latest purification technologies at the Aquatech fair. The company supplied 150,000 liters of potable water for 73 million visitors during the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

According to Chen Lianggang, a water treatment expert and deputy head of the Membrane Industry Association of China, purification processes in most water purification plants end up consuming 5 percent of the water being processed.
Upgrading these plants with new technologies will ensure that 99 percent of the processed water ends up going to consumers instead of being wasted during the purification process, Chen said.

Experts estimate that a purification plant with a daily capacity of 1.5 million liters will produce between 70,000 to 100,000 liters of waste water during the process. However, new technologies have been developed that allow these plants to safely re-purify waste water.

These technologies are currently being used at Beijing’s No. 9 Water Purification Plant and the Baoshan Luojing Water Purification Plant in Shanghai.

Kelvin Lau said that waste water treatment technology is a solution for recycling water resources on a smaller scale. However, water control projects and regional coordination efforts should be relied on to shore up water supplies during droughts, he said.
