Landscape architecture West 8 designs master plan with ecological water system for Guangzhou, China

February 25th, 2013 by nwp

Guangzhou City Government announced that the entry of Rotterdam-based urban and landscape architecture West 8 won the Guangzhou Fangchun Huadi Sustainable Master Plan competition.

Guangzhou Huadi Fangchun (Flower City), located at Southern China, is a former delta land with traditional horticultural legacy of nowadays Guangzhou.

With speedy expansion of the horticultural industry, the current scattered and disorganized land use of the area has pushed back the nature and its eco system is severely polluted.

The Guangzhou Government is in search of a sustainable solution to the current problem in the era of rapid urban development. West 8’s winning entry provides the city a master plan with sustainable vision.

Partly wetlands area
The plan has the site area of 2,050 ha. (20.5km2), whereas more than 450 ha. is wetlands area. It consists of new living and industrial environments with ecological water system, wetlands, distinct division of land use zoning, urban planning with a highlight of cultural heritage and a design of an International Flora Expo Master plan which will function as a focal point and economic generator for the whole development.

Ecological water system
The master plan vision starts with the introduction of an ecological water system network. Implementing this system will rearrange the land use structure on a large scale. It consists of the main ecological cleaning machine imbedded in locations, a Primary Water Collector System, Secondary Water Connector with Water Locks (Inlets/Outlets) and Tertiary Water Network of Small Scale Ditches (canals) which will be streaming along the gridline corresponding to the Guangzhou and Fushan cities historical axis, the Canton axis.

Flora expo
A Central Park will also be established by hosting the Guangzhou International Flora Expo in the first phase of the development. This Expo will be designed as a compact event. After the year when the expo takes place it will be transformed into a metropolitan park of Guangzhou: the Central Park of Huadi Island.

West 8 wins design competition for new waterfront former naval fort in San Francisco

December 28th, 2012 by nwp

Fort Mason Center has selected the Dutch West 8 Urban design & landscape architecture as the winner of its 2012 design competition for the 13-acre waterfront campus in San Francisco.

The three-month long competition sought creative and practical design concepts to further enliven and integrate the site.

The design will enable Fort Mason Center to realize its full potential, both as a vital and stimulating location for arts and culture, and as an attractive destination for enjoyment of the site.

Preserve naval military identity
West 8’s design calls for seven key strategies that bolster and preserve Fort Mason’s legacy and naval military identity while activating the water’s edge, improving pedestrian access and parking, and enlivening spaces for expanded public programming and arts.

Pier One is reinvented as a publicly accessible art-oriented hotel, while the other buildings diversify programming to create a robust cultural destination centered around lively public plazas.

Waterside improvements bring wooden decks, floating pontoons, and bridges that weave the site together, bring people to the water’s edge, and showcase amazing views of the shore and Bay.

Three finalists
The three finalists – Bruner/Cott, West 8 and AMP Arquitectos – were selected from twenty invited firms to consider an enhanced plan for the Fort Mason Center campus. In selecting a winner, entries were evaluated on design merit and the positive impact the proposal will have on the center. Links to the design proposals for the three finalists are below and are on display at Fort Mason Center in Building D:

Shanghai authorities approve multi level waterfront design by KuiperCompagnons

June 12th, 2012 by nwp

The Rotterdam based design and architect bureau KuiperCompagnons received the approval of the Shanghai authorities for their design of a new waterfront along the Huanpu river in Shanghai. For the extension of the southern part of the promenade Bund in Shanghai KuiperCompagnons made a draft of a multi-level skypark.

Reconnection to the river
The draft connects the old boroughs with the skypark Huanpu River, allowing the residents of Shanghai here get access again. Docks will be emptied and connected to make room for a waterfront walkway.

Old factories and warehouses will be removed or renovated to make way for bars, hotels and commercial buildings. One of the challenges of the project is to link the new Financial Center to the river.

Further develop draft design
South Bund Waterfront Area Integral Development Headquarter, Bund Financial Cluster Leaders’ Office and Shanghai Huangpu District Planning en het Land Administration Bureau, asked KuiperCompagnons to further develop the draft design.

Qingdao: integration of harbor and residency
Additionally KuiperCompagnons announced it won the competition for a new design for the Chines harbor of Qingdao on the Yellow Sea. The proposed draft combined the fishing terminals with living, residency and recreational functions.

The public space is placed on the roofs of the buildings, so that harbour activities of Qingdao can continue uninterrupted. The coming and going of the fishing boats is integrated in the urban spatial planning as an attraction.

DHV and KuiperCompagnons design waterfront on Warta River in Poznan, Poland

February 8th, 2012 by nwp

Poznan Municipality and investor SwedeCenter have founded a partnership called “Na Rzecz Warty” with the Dutch consultancy firms KuiperCompagnons (Urban Planning & Design) and DHV (Engineering). This cooperation opens up an unique opportunity for designing a complex development plan for the waterfront areas situated on the Warta River.

The Dutch Government is supporting the project as part of its ‘Working with water worldwide’ programme. The total investment comes to 400,000 euro.

Several severe floodings
In recent years the Warta on several occasions has caused floods in Poznan, with major material and financial damage as a result. The canalized course of the river is no longer able to cope with the ever-larger peak flows. What’s more, the civil engineering approach to the river adopted by the municipal authorities in the past has led to the city now back-facing the river.

Improvement of flood safety system
The ‘Development Strategy River Warta Poznań’ project hinges on drawing up a strategy that allows water safety measures to be incorporated in Poznań’s broadly based social development while at the same time enabling spatial developments to be adapted to essential water management measures.

The currently neglected river floodplains will be restored and made attractive in tandem with water safety improvements. Thus the historically mutually beneficial relationship of city and water will get a future-orientated refreshment.

The Dutch partners KuiperCompagnons and DHV will draw upon their experience from various ‘Room for the River’ projects in the Netherlands and urban innovations worldwide.

Working with water worldwide
The Dutch ‘Working with water worldwide’ subsidy program seeks to combine the strengths of experts to improve the international position of the Dutch water sector, thus contributing to solutions to the global water issue. For this purpose the program is supporting ambitious parties in the Dutch water sector by providing subsidies to carry out innovative projects in other countries.

The Partners for Water project is being implemented by NL EVD International (part of NL Agency) and the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP).

West 8 is one of the three finalists vying to design new St. Petersburg Pier

September 1st, 2011 by nwp

The Dutch landscape architecture firm West 8, after knocking out 20 other competitors around the world, become one of the three finalists vying to design a replacement for the new St. Petersburg Pier, which has been the centerpiece of the city since it’s opening in 1973. The selection panel on Friday 19th Aug announced this news.

Final presentation remaining candidates
Only three firms are in the running now. The other two competitors are Bjarke Ingels Group, or BIG, a Danish firm and New York base firm Michael Maltzan Architecture. The city council is scheduled to hear a presentation on the three firms at a meeting September 8.

Jury in favor of innovation
The panel, or public jury, that chose the three comprises three professionals in architecture and design, and two public officials, County Commissioner Ken Welch and City Councilwoman Leslie Curran. They seemed to favor the innovative. Susan Fanstein, a jury member, and a professor at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, thought West 8′s design work was “really handsome.”

Final recommendation to city
When the city council approves the finalists on 8th Sep, the three will submit design concepts for a new pier by Nov. 29, with presentations in December. Then the panel that chose the three will make a final recommendation to the city council, which will then vote on Feb. 2. Roughly 50 million dollar has been designated for the structure that will replace The Pier.
