HZ University of Applied Sciences, Vlissingen, the Netherland

A ‘delta’ is an area where land, rivers and sea come together. Throughout the ages, many deltas have developed into important trade and production centres with high population densities. The continued development of these deltas are (inter)nationally crying for attention, among others, as a result of climate changes. There is plenty of work to be done in the world of water. As a Delta Academy graduate you will quickly find a job.

Water Management

How can we solve problems such as drought and starving populations? How can we prevent floods? And how can we guarantee enough drinking water? Constructive water management is rapidly becoming one of the world’s most pressing topics. Water Management at HZ deals with these worldwide water issues. This programme is centred around the subjects of biology, ecology and technology. You will acquire a broad knowledge of a variety of aquatic systems and learn to cooperate with professionals from different disciplines taking into account and balancing all the different interests involved. After all, water management interacts with many spheres in society: the supply of drinking water, industrial and irrigation water, tourism, legislation and politics.

After graduation, you can work as an engineer, a consultant, policy-maker or researcher for water authorities, industries, scientific institutions or environmental organizations.

For already fifteen years Water Management at HZ University of Applied Sciences has been the best Bachelor water programme of the Dutch Universities of Applied Sciences.

Civil Engineering

Do you want to work on coastal safety in delta areas and make sure people in these areas are protected against rising water levels? If so, Civil Engineering is definitely your subject, certainly when you’d like to work in teams and on large-scale projects! Civil engineering is always about progress. As a civil engineer you manage (international) projects, such as the construction or design of ports, bridges, roads and dikes, or perhaps even of tunnels, islands and offshore airfields. You will become an expert in hydraulic engineering and coastal protection and will learn to apply this worldwide.

After your graduation you can, among others, work as a planning engineer, construction supervisor, designer, urban water manager, structural engineer, advisor, project manager.

Civil Engineering at HZ University of Applied Sciences has been assessed as being the best civil engineering programme of Dutch Universities of Applied Sciences according to the “Keuzegids Hoger Onderwijs 20010” (Selection guide Higher education)

Delta Management*

Delta Management is a broad Bachelor programme. This study programme deals with coastal development. What is possible in a delta? How can we safely live there? Can tourism be developed there? How do we get enough supplies of fresh water? As an area manager you bring together the interests of many parties based on your overall viewpoint and you know what is needed for the future development of delta areas.

Geography is an essential component of the programme. The focus of the lectures is, among others, on water, climate, ecology, environmental planning, legislation and regulations, economic insights, communications and process management.

As a graduate you can work as an assistant-area manager or junior project manager with governmental bodies, consultancies, real estate developers and large (international) companies.

Admission requirements

To enrol for the Delta Academy study programmes, you must be in the possession of a diploma that is equivalent to a Dutch secondary education diploma. For Water Management and Civil Engineering, a good knowledge in mathematics, physics, biology and chemistry is essential. Delta Management can also be followed by student with an Economics or Economics and Social Sciences profile.

Follow-up study Master

Some 25% of the Delta Academy graduates continue their studies at Master level. Possibilities here are at universities in the Netherlands or abroad but also in the future at HZ University of Applied Sciences where a Master programme in Water Management is being developed.

Research

The practical-oriented research within the Delta Academy is placed with the Applied Research Centres (Lectorates). In a Lectorate, industry and science join forces and work is carried out on issues from the business world. This way, students and lecturers become directly acquainted with the latest professional developments.

Unique education

The Delta Academy offers unique education based on four pillars:

1. International orientation and context
The Delta Academy deals with opportunities and problems from national and international deltas. The Academy cooperates with the international professional field, foreign governmental bodies, universities and knowledge centres. Agreements have been entered on student and lecturer exchange with universities in various deltas in the world and there is, of course, the possibility to do your work placement abroad.

2. Connection to the professional field
20% of the lectures in the first three years of study within the Delta Academy are given by enthusiastic lecturers from the professional field. The company lecturers have had a didactic training, so they know how to transfer their knowledge in an optimal way. This arrangement will help you to find a job more easily.

3. Interdisciplinary
The professional field has made clear that they would like to employ staff that is capable of looking beyond the borders of the technical sphere of work. To train technical staff with a broad view, 25% of the programme is interdisciplinary. This means that within certain projects you will cooperate with students from other programmes, such as Communications or an economic programme.

4. The perfect location
HZ is located in the South-west of the Netherlands, a region that is perfectly suited for the Delta Academy’s study programmes. This part of the Netherlands consists of an area of estuaries behind a dune coastline. It is characterized by closed sea-arms, open waters and salt marshes on the seaside of the dikes. On the landside of the dike, you find the polders. The large-scale hydraulic protective structures in the region also provide an interesting study subject for the students.
