US interested in Dutch climate adaptation plan
This second newsletter brings you a selection of the news reports on the international activities of the Dutch water sector, as published on the website www.dutchwatersector.com in October.
Remarkable was the visit of delta commissioner Wim Kuijken to the US and Canada. Kuijken is appointed by the Dutch government and is made responsible to prevent the Netherlands from flooding in the future. Given the expectation of a severe sea level rise and the fact that one third of the Netherlands lies below the current sea level, this is a matter of national importance. During his talks with senior American experts and politicians Kuijken noticed a great interest in the Dutch approach with a special climate adaptation programme.
During the International Water Week in Amsterdam from October 29 till November 4 Kuijkens’ Delta programme will be a main issue.

Berson UV treats wastewater in Dutch hospital with advanced oxidation
Like all hospitals, the wastewater from the Isala Hospital in Zwolle, the Netherlands, contains elevated levels of X-ray contrast compounds and various other pharmaceutical residues. The hospital is the first in Europa to have a full-scale trial for the treatment of its waste water. The complete wastewater stream is pre-treated in a membrane bioreactor, followed by an UV/ H2O2 installation. Early September Berson UV reported their InLine medium pressure UV-system is doing well. The full-scale trial is part of the European PILLS project, which is investigating the best treatment methods to eliminate pharmaceutical residues from hospital wastewater.

British queen ‘goes green’ with Dutch Landy hydro power screw
The 40-tonne Archimedes’ screws were put in place early September by crane at Romney Weir on the River Thames, just a few miles from Queen Elizabeth’s favorite royal residence Windsor Castle. The turbines are made by the Dutch water technology company Landustrie. The LANDY hydro power screws are installed in a small overflow dam of the Thames where they will generate energy. The water that flows downstream sets the screw in motion and so generates ‘green’ electricity for local use. The Archimedes Screw turbines, supplied to the Windsor Castle by Southeast Power Engineering Ltd, will be ready to operate from November.
