Making the difference

A worldwide invitation to join in

The Dutch water sector wants to share its knowledge and skills in order to contribute to the global water challenges. The motto is: big challenges need joint solutions – let’s work together.

On three specific themes the Dutch water sector wants to make a difference. The intention is to realize innovative water projects around the world, involving Dutch water companies, knowledge centres, non-governmental organizations and authorities.

  • Water for all – sustainable water supply
  • More crop per drop – sustainable water use for agriculture
  • Enabling Delta Life – sustainable water management in river deltas

The themes concentrate on cross-sectoral matters. It is at the edges of these different worlds that innovations are likely to occur and have the potential to lead to ground-breaking solutions.

The Dutch water sector invites everybody, worldwide, to join in.

Making the difference (1): Water for all

Fresh water is getting scarce. Demand is growing. The answer to these two mutually reinforcing developments is water resource management. The use of a fresh water source must be made sustainable. This requires good knowledge of the local hydrological circumstances, prevention of water pollution and minimizing water use by e.g. reuse.

Key elements for the Dutch water sector are:

  • modeling groundwater
  • water treatment technologies (drinking water, waste water and industrial water)
  • appropriated water technologies for developing countries

Making the difference (2): More crop per drop

The world population is expected to grow significantly, so will the demand for food. Fresh water may be one of the limiting factors to produce more food. In such cases is it important to use the available water more effectively.

Key elements for the Dutch water sector are:

  • development of new irrigation systems using GPS and remote sensing
  • development of a zero water using green house

Making the difference (3): Enabling delta life

The world deltas are at threat. The sea level is rising, the soil is subsiding. Rurally people are moving to the delta cities. Infrastructure is an important factor to be able to facilitate the growth of a low-lying densely populated river delta.

Key elements for the Dutch water sector are:

  • building with nature
  • water and energy
  • flood protection and ict
