Curaçao adopts recommendations Vitens-Evides International on reduction non-revenue water

Recommendations made by Vitens Evides International following the investigation into the nature and extent of non-revenue water in Curaçao have been adopted by the water authorities of Curaçao.

Vitens Evides International (VEI) will advise the responsible organisation, Bureau Telecom en Post (BTP) on setting up and implementing measurement protocols for the monitoring and evaluation of water deliveries that are 'lost' and do not generate income.

Bureau Telecom en Post (BTP) supervises the drinking water, energy and fuel sectors on the island of Curaçao.

Methode to determine losses
Vitens Evides International has supported BTP since 2011. Together, they assessed the effectiveness of the local drinking water company Aqualectra.

Part of the investigation was the nature and extent of the delivery of non-revenue water and VEI introduced a method for determining leakages in isolated parts of the network on a daily basis.

VEI will – where necessary and desired – also support Aqualectra in the implementation of reduction activities.

Drastic reduction
An important part of the advice of VEI is that Aqualectra must drastically reduce the 'lost' water deliveries. Drinking water in Curaçao is five times more expensive than in the Netherlands, so leakage losses also mean significant financial losses.

In the media Director Charluce Sandries of BTP announced that the council of ministers wants Aqualectra to take both technical and administrative measures to reduce the delivery of non-revenue water from the current 25% to 17% in three years.

Curaçao is an island in the Caribbean Sea that is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
