The economy of Ghana is rapidly growing and therefore nowadays Ghana is regarded as a "middle income country". When its comes to water management the development of urban sanitation is the main priority. Only 13% of the population has access to improved basic sanitation. However, the country made progress on other issues, like improving drinking water facilities.

The collaboration of Ghana and The Netherlands is based on a strategic programme. This programme focuses on sanitation. In the "Ghana Netherlands Water, Sanitation & Hygiene Programme", supported by the Dutch Water development cooperation programme, the Dutch embassy, the Ghanese government and private investors work together.
