The Turkeys population is growing and this puts pressure on the availability of drinking water. Approximately 80% of the population has access to drinking water and sanitation. In addition, providing safe drinking water and the maintance of the sanitation infrastructure are issues. Also water management in Turkey is complex, because many stakeholders are involved.

In 2006 the Turkish Netherlands Water Partnership was founded. The aim is to coordinate initiatives and activities of the Dutch water sector in Turkey. In the past few years Dutch-based firms worked together with Turkish experts on water management issues. The collaboration is focused on integrated water resources management and the decentralization of drinking water facilities and waste water systems.
