India has a population of 1.2 billion people. The wealth is increasing and the amount of people having an average income is growing. These developments bring great challenges for India, also on water management. In specific, provinding clean drinking water and adequate sanitation are issues. In 2014 the Indian government annouced the "1000 cities plan" for water and sanitation. Goal of this project is the implementation of a urban water cycle in cities in India.

A Dutch water delegation visited India for a trade mission in 2014. The mission focused on the plan for the rural water and sanitation for villiges and the development of a plan for the founding of a Industrial Water Technology Center. In addition, every two years India organises "Aquatech India", a conference on water technology. In 2010 and 2012 the Dutch water sector also attended this conference.
