United States

Over the past decade hurricanes caused huge damage in the USA. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit New Orleans and caused enormous damage in the city and the state of Louisiana. In 2012 the North East region of the USA, the biggest metro region in the country and a great economic power, was affected by the hurricane Sandy. The hurricane damaged and destroyed more than 650,000 houses and hundreds of thousands of businesses. Sandy unveiled the social and physical vulnerabilities of this region and their interdependencies.

The USA and the Netherlands collaborate on water management issues ever since hurricane Katrina damaged the coast of Louisiana. In the North East region of the USA Dutch-based firms are involved in the "rebuilding by design" projects. On the other hand Dutch experts learn from the USA on issues like flood warning systems and evacuation.
