Geotechnical evaluation of Californian levees

Helicopter geophysical surveys and Lidar mapping

Posted on 18 October 2011

The Department of Water Resources selected the URS, Fugro, GEI team to assist them with the geotechnical evaluation of the state’s urban and non-urban levees. The levee projects have a combined budget of USD 221 million. The contracts involve the evaluation of 750 km of urban and 2500 km of non-urban levees.

The evaluation follows the US Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE’s) and program-specific protocols. The levee evaluations programs performs a logical progression of historic data collection, field explorations, analysis, data gap assessment, supplemental data gathering through additional field explorations and further levee analysis. This progression of data gathering and study renders several activities.

Next to geotechnical work, Fugro also performed geomorphologic studies, helicopter geophysical, high resolution LiDAR, and ship-borne bathymetry surveys.

  • An adequacy assessment for each investigated levee system
  • Identification of potential levee repair alternatives
  • Associated repair costs for detected deficiencies
