To support Benin in addressing its water related challenges, a project within the Netherlands Initiative for Capacity Development in Higher Education (NICHE) program was established.

This €2.8 million project (2013-2016) was developed with the aim of supporting the development of the new national water institute (Institut National de l’Eau). The water institute will respond to the demands for water expertise from the society by supporting the government and cooperation with the public and private sector. Special attention will be given to issues of gender and entrepreneurship.

The Netherlands gained a lot of experience in conceptual development and concretization of such institutes.
Hence a Dutch consortium has been formed with Wageningen University, UNESCO-IHE, Deltares and Delft University of Technology, led by Van Hall Larenstein.
