Vitens Evides International and Sawaco start joint initiative to improve water supply in 40 Vietnamese cities

Dutch water company Vitens Evides International (VEI) and Vietnamese water company Sawaco signed a new two-year contract on 25th April to improve the supply of drinking water in 40 Vietnamese cities.

It is the first contract to be signed in the context of a major loan (of one billion dollars) by the Asian Development Bank to Vietnam.

In the next few years Sawaco intends to develop a more structured approach towards Non Revenue Water among the distribution companies. It is also planning to introduce robust network management.

New milestone in cooperation
The contract was signed in Ho Chi Minh City by Peter Vermaat (right) on behalf of VEI and by Mr Tran Dinh Phu (left) of Sawaco.

The partnership started six years ago with a Utility Support Programme that was financed by the Dutch embassy. Last year a new contract was signed, involving partial funding by the Sustainable Water Fund for the implementation of the Mekong Delta Project.

The new contract is now financed entirely via the Asian Development Bank and therefore represents a new financing milestone.

Reduction of non revenue water
The primary purpose of the project is to assist Sawaco as Care Taker, as well in the areas of central water distribution or DCC and asset management.

To carry out the project, VEI works together with Howaco, the company of the local partner Truong Ngo. He spent many years working for Vitens and now has his own company in Vietnam.

VEI has been in a working partnership with Sawaco since 2008.
