The ceremony kicks off a week with a packed international programme that has been lined up.

There are good reasons for a festive start of this year's edition. The organisers have managed to set up a fantastic programme, packed with events for water professionals seeking truly integrated water solutions for a circular economy and resilient cities.

Additionally, the ceremony will celebrate the silver jubilee of Aquatech Amsterdam.

The opening ceremony will be moderated by executive director Ger Bergkamp of the International Water Association.

In the presence of keynote speakers EU-commissioner Karmenu Vella and Dutch minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen, he will set the scene by addressing the world's emerging water problems and zoom in on the hot issues of climate adaptation and economic growth.

This year's Amsterdam International Water Week has two main topics: circular economy and resilient cities.

The European Union is about to present its renewed, more ambitious, strategy on circular economy in support of sustainable growth.

Commissioner Vella is expected to disclose some of the implications of this new policy for closing the water cycle with resource recovery and water reuse.

Minister Schlutz van Haegen will address the issues of disaster risk reduction and resilient cities. Both issues are high on her agenda as the Netherlands aspires to a world leading role in flood prevention and integrated urban water management.
