dws-boskalis-peterhead-rocks2-770px-1Dredging company Boskalis Westminister and engineering firm McLaughlin & Harvey announced to have been appointed by Peterhead Port Authority for Peterhead Scheme 2.

The project entails the strengthening and deepening of the Scottish port – just north of Aberdeen - land reclamation with revetment, widening of the harbour entrance, demolition works and improved services throughout.

The harbour will also benefit from significantly improved realignment to the existing quay walls and increased draft which will facilitate larger vessels.

Peterhead Harbour’s new development plans also include the relocation of existing fish market to the North Harbour.

Completion of earlier work by Boskalis in Peterhead harbour in 2009-2010 included a reclamation quay construction and breakwater extension works (on top photo).

While deepening the harbour, the dredged material will be used to create a 430,556 square feet reclamation area for future developments, while maximising existing resources and achieving environmental benefits for the scheme.

McLaughlin & Harvey, along with the clients designer RPS Consulting Engineers, has developed an innovative approach with the first use in the UK of an RD steel piling solution developed in Scandinavia.

RD piles are connected by welded interlocking sections, creating a continuous pipe pile wall against horizontal and vertical loads.

Europe’s largest port for white fish
This scheme is part of an overall redevelopment of Europe’s largest white and pelagic fishing port, it will take approximately 18 months to complete allowing the port to continue to support the economy in the NE of Scotland.

The construction works will create over 100 full-time jobs with a number of local companies and businesses involved in the project. Upon completion, the project will support over 2,500 jobs within the wider economy.
