Consultancy firm Witteveen+Bos is leading a consortium consisting of Hidroinzenjering (Croatia), DHI (Denmark) and Geodezija (Croatia) to supply technical assistance for the rehabilitation and improvement of the Sava River waterway in the Republic of Croatia.

The contract was recently signed between Witteveen+Bos and the Central Finance and Contracting Agency in Zagreb, Croatia.

The project started in May, 2013 and will last a total of 20 months.

Providing all technical documentation
The overall objective of this project is to rehabilitate Croatia’s part of the Corridor VII, a Pan-European waterway, to meet the requirements of the international classification Class IV. The project purpose is to provide all technical documentation for the rehabilitation and improvement of selected sections of the Sava River.

Meeting EU and national legislation
Based on this documentation, describing exactly how the technical and navigational condition of the river can be upgraded in accordance with the requirement of the EU and national legislation, the project can also be proposed for EU co-financing.

Various river works
Various technical design and environmental studies have been carried out in the past. The proposed works include the construction of groynes, bank protection works, river bottom sills and dredging, as well as the rehabilitation of existing structures.

The existing designs have to be reviewed, amended and transformed into main designs and tender documentation for execution of the river training works based on the 2D hydraulic and morphological modelling.

Model update
The scope of works for the consortium include the Sava River Section Brčko - Sisak, the updating of a 1D mathematical model, execution of field investigations, the preparation and execution of a 2D morphological model, amendment of the existing designs, design of new structures, main and detailed designs, documentation to obtain building permits, bill of quantities, IPA/CF project application, cost-benefit analysis and a tender dossier with drawings and technical specifications.

Witteveen+Bos has been active in the Infrastructure development of Croatia since 2006 and has a permanent project office in Zagreb.
