Mott MacDonald appointed to improve water management in Lakes State, South Sudan

An international consortium led by consultancy firm Mott MacDonald has been appointed by the Dutch government to implement the Water for Lakes Programme, designed to contribute to national security and reduce the dependency on food aid, in the Lakes State, South Sudan.

Other participants in the consortium are VNG International, the international cooperation agency of the Association of Netherlands Municipalities and SNV Netherlands Development Organisation.

Improvement of integrated water management
The consortium will provide technical assistance to the government of South Sudan for the development of an integrated water management system.

It includes improvement of physical infrastructure and strengthening of institutions responsible for the water governance and infrastructure operation. This will seek to improve access to clean drinking water for 800,000 people, while increasing water resources for livestock, agriculture and fisheries.

At the same time, a 31.8 million euro portfolio for investment projects will be formulated to stimulate economic development in the region and improve living conditions in a sustainable way.

Unlocking potential in agriculture and fisheries
Caroline la Chapelle, Mott MacDonald's project director, said: "Mott MacDonald is committed to leaving a lasting legacy in South Sudan. By ensuring provision of safe water, improved sanitation, and unlocking the potential for production in agriculture, livestock and fisheries, we hope we can bring stability and well-being to the local communities in the Lake State".

The project is due to be completed in 2018.
