WaterCampus Leeuwarden welcomes first residents in new futuristic building
Two residents of the WaterCampus Leeuwarden, research institute Wetsus and Norwegian Aqua Nirvana Foundation, moved into the new futuristic building on 23 January.
The building has the 4 star status of BREEAM excellent on sustainability and features all kinds of state of the art energy and water technology, including rainwater catchment, separated collection and treatment of waste water, heat and cooling storage, air-source heat pump and thermally active concrete core.

Wetsus main resident
The new campus building is the headquarters of Wetsus, the European center of excellence for sustainable water technology.
Wetsus will be the main resident as it will also move its laboratory facilities to the new building.
The new laboratory will be larger than the current one and will enable more multidisciplinary research by the 70 PhD-students from many different European universities, working together with the 90 water-related companies that participate in the institute.
Development of sustainable water technology
The other resident that already moved too, is Aqua Nirvana Foundation (ANF). The mission of this Norwegian investment organisation is the universal access to clean and safe drinking water.
Located at the WaterCampus Leeuwarden the organisation is able to contribute to the further development of sustainable water technology .
About WaterCampus Leeuwarden
In the past years, the WaterCampus Leeuwarden has grown considerably. It facilities the cooperation between research, education, business and government to develop new breakthrough water technology.
The campus houses some 20 institutes and water technology - mainly spin off - companies. Wetsus is the initiating institute for the scientific research.
For applied education and research it houses the Centre of Expertise Water Technology (CEW), and for vocational education the Center for Innovative Craftsmanship Water (CIV Water).
Also based at the campus is the Water Alliance, supportive to bringing new ideas to the market.
Not on the campus itself, but located in the immediate vicinity of the city of Leeuwarden, are six affiliated demo sites to experiment with new water technology on real water streams under real circumstance.
