dws-stockholm-2015-opening-2014-770pxNext week some 110 Dutch water experts will attend the 25th edition of the Stockholm World Water Week, representing 45 organisations involved in solving global water issues.

Two main themes on the agenda of the Dutch delegation are improvement of water services and scaling-up of the WASH implementation.

The Stockholm World Water Week 2015 will take place from 23 - 28 August and is expected to be attended by 3,000 experts from all over the world.

This year's silver jubilee edition has the theme: Water for development.

Global water goal for 2030
As during the 7th World Water Forum in Korea in April, this year's edition of the Stockholm Water Week will be dominated by discussions on the sustainable development goal Nr.6 on water, to be adopted by the United Nations in September.

The goal addresses the full range of core water issues, including universal access to clean water and sanitation by 2030.

At the Stockholm Water Week the global water community is expected to come up with new ideas and proposals to be able to reach this water goal. There is some heavy lifting to do.

Many Dutch experts participate in the 160 sessions that will take place and discuss topics related to the nr.6 water goal, including financing, sustainable development goals, integrity, gender issues, climate change, energy, sanitation, food, conflict resolution and water management.

One of the main themes on the Dutch agenda is the improvement of water services in urban area. By making the water supply more reliable, customers are willing to pay more for their drinking water.

Another topic is the scaling-up of the WASH-implementation. At the current pace of implementing new facilities for clean water and sanitation, it is unlikely that the targeted water goal for universal access shall by achieved by 2030.

The Dutch delegation will challenge the global water community to come up with new ways to accelerate the implementation.

Additionally the Dutch government conveyed seminars on disaster risk reduction based on prevention and management of flood risks.
