dws-verdygo-wwtp-roermond-aerial-770pxWaterschapsbedrijf Limburg gave the go-ahead for construction and development of the first Verdygo plants at municipal wastewater treatment plants Roermond and Simpelveld, the Netherlands.

The Verdygo concept introduces a complete new type of wastewater treatment plants that is easily adjustable to changing circumstances such as increasing or decreasing influent loads.

The construction and execution is expected to start early next year and is to be completed by mid-2016. The total investment for both projects is 10.7 million euro.

Modular construction
Together, both wwtp Roermond and wwtp Simpelveld will form the blueprint for a complete new concept of wastewater treatment, using the modular Verdygo design.

At wwtp Simpelveld (11,000 inhabitants) the organic treatment section - including sludge thickening - will be replaced according to the Verdygo design concept. At wwtp Roermond (230,000 inhabitants - on top photo) the initial section will be replaced, including boosters, grids and sand collection.

An important feature of Verdygo is its industrial modular construction. This construction allows a wastewater treatment plant to adjust - expand or shrink - quickly and easily respond to for instance aging of population, new development in an area or climate change.

Close collaboration
The construction and development of the Verdygo plants in Roermond and Simpelveld will be done by a number of companies who have won the contracts following an extensive tendering process.

Aan de Stegge Construction & Engineering is the main contractor and responsible for design and realization, Royal HaskoningDHV for the Nereda treatment technology.

The four companies to construct the tanks are ISS Tanks, SBE, Bestcon and De Groot Vroomshoop.

Electrical engineering firm Croon will deliver the Wauter software, the central process automation system from which all 17 treatment plants and 141 pumping stations are managed and operated by Waterschapsbedrijf Limburg.

Definitive design
The definitive design is currently being developed. Contraction firm Aan de Stegge and Waterschapsbedrijf Limburg will jointly develop a blueprint for the Verdygo concept that can be used on future projects.
