Myanmar students invited to participate in Myanmar-Netherlands Water Challenge 2016
Students from nine universities across Myanmar are challenged to participate in teams and develop new ideas for the sustainable development of the Ayeyarwady river delta. The teams will be support by experts from the Dutch water sector.
The programme of the challenge includes various workshops and ends in May when the teams enter a 3-days competition for the best idea.
The central theme is Smart Delta with a focus on informed decision making, using all relevant data sources, in the interest of its sustainable development - to the benefit of the people, the environment and the economy.
The Myanmar-Netherlands Water Challenge 2016 was officially launched at Yangon Technological University in Myanmar on 18 January.

Exciting opportunity for future water professionals
At the launch event an opening note was given by U Ko Ko Oo, Deputy director general of the Directorate of water resources and improvement of river systems (DWIR) of Myanmar’s Ministry of Transport.
On behalf of the Dutch government Ms. Reina Buijs spoke about capacity building in relation to water management and international cooperation.
Marten Hillen, Director business development water Asia Pacific of Royal HaskoningDHV said on the occasion: “We are pleased to work with Myanmar’s highly motivated students to work on the country’s water challenges. This Water Challenge is a great opportunity to show students how exciting it is to work in the water sector. We look forward to growing our team of water professionals in Yangon."
First applications received
Immediately after the event, already more than 40 students submitted an application for the highlight of the water challenge taking place from 10 until 12 May 2016.
Lead partners of the challenge from the Netherlands are Arcadis, Van Oord, Royal HaskoningDHV and Deltares. The Netherlands Embassy in Yangon acts as strategic partner of the program.
Application for Myanmar students closes on 18 March 2016.
