dws-flood-coast-awards-exhibition-entry-770pxThree Dutch-related companies, BAM Nutall, Team Van Oord and VBA, have been awarded by the Environment Agency for their excellent work undertaken in flood scheme projects.

On the occasion of the Flood & Coast 2016 conference the awards were handed out during a gala dinner in Telford on 24 February.

The Dutch-related companies won their awards in the categories: innovation, sustainable resource management and a special award for customer services.

Innovative, customer focused and collaborative
The Project Excellence Awards recognize excellent project work that have not only done the 'day job' but showcase real-life examples of what can be achieved with teamwork, creativity and professionalism.

Deputy chief executive David Rooke of the Environment Agency was on the jury panel and said: "I always look forward to judging the projects that showcase the great outcomes we, our partners and supply chain achieve for people and the environment. Once again the projects were of an exemplary standard. My congratulations to everyone involved and in particular to the winners".

For 2016 there were 60 individual projects entered across seven categories, making a total of 96 submissions. A pre-selection panel shortlisted three projects in each category for further judging.

Dutch-related winning projects
dws-flood-coast-ea-award-winners-team-van-oord-350pxInnovation winner: Broomhill Sands scheme by Team Van Oord
This scheme is a 30 million UK pound construction project to improve the beach over 2,5 kilometres including a rock revetment and a replacement of existing timber groynes by ones made from recycled plastic.

Trailing aerial photogrammetric survey were used for detailing the as-built construction. Also innovative was the management of the project to keep the beach open as much as possible. At certain locations kitesurfers were allowed when the work continued.

Jury appraisals: using groynes from recycled plastic, working with the kitesurf community, providing additional public safety, reuse of saline-contaminated clay.

This scheme is the transformation of arable land back into the coastal marshland it once was. This was made possible by raising the level of the land with 3 million tonnes of clay from the Crossrail project in London.

The newly restored landscape of 155 hectares is a wetland mosaic of mudflats an saltmarsh, shallow lagoons and pastures.

Jury appraisals: transport of the clay by sea avoided 200,000 lorry journeys, used material that would otherwise have gone to a landfill, was reused to manage the coastal habitats.

This scheme is the improvement of a tidal flood defence along the east bank of the river Arun. The main elements of construction include sheet piling, concrete flood walls, earth embankments, construction of a king pile wall, pontoon systems.

It also improves the walkway along the riverside, creating an attractive pedestrian route between the town and the beach. The new promenade has wide visual appeal through the use of improved lighting, planting and attractive seating areas.

A public liaison manager acted as the single point of contact for the local community.
