Amsterdam International Water Week 2017: creating real breakthroughs
By 2050, 9 billion people are expected to inhabit the planet. Water scarcity on the one hand, and flood-proof cities on the other, will become our main challenges. With this message the organisers of the next year's edition of the Amsterdam International Water Week are calling on cities, water utilities and industry to propose cases that will be matched with innovative expertise, ideas and technology. Their goal: to achieve real breakthroughs by bringing together decision makers, innovators and water experts but also financial and government experts.
The invitation for cases was part of the first presentation of the outlines of the 2017 edition.
The Amsterdam International Water Week 2017 will take place in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from 30 October to 3 November 2017.
Lennart Silvis closed the 2015 conference and invited everybody to the next one in 2017.
Invitation to forward cases
The AIWW-conference is doing something new in 2017. It will match owners with concrete international water cases with international experts, solutions providers and other stakeholders to identify real breakthrough opportunities. The organisers expect the final programme to feature some 12 to 15 of these cases, drawn from pressing examples around the world. One, for example, is due to help shape thinking on how the city of Amsterdam can cope with climate change-influenced rainfall patterns in the future.
"We urge cities, utilities and industries to come forward and be part of this innovative opportunity,’ said Lennart Silvis, chair of the managing board of the event. "For the world of science and for technology experts, this is a chance to launch new insights and solutions, or to contribute to the future direction of these cases, so register your interest as well."

New era for water management
The programme will mark the new era for water management with its complex and unpredictable risks, challenges and opportunities.
As economies grow, so does the demand for water and the impact on the world's resources.
"It is clear there are huge challenges now and in the decades ahead, not least because of population growth, industrialisation and the impacts of climate change", says Silvis. "To help build our response to these challenges, we have identified four key themes for AIWW 2017 that run through all the activities that will be taking place. The topics also tie into current affairs, for example the Sustainable Development Goals".

Four main challenges
AIWW 2017 has identified the four main water challenges facing the cities and industries of tomorrow. These challenges are the binding principle in all cases, the in-depth labs and other contributions.

● water management and resilience
● institutional transition and governance
● innovative water system implementations
The organisers of the Amsterdam International Water Week invite you to share your cases, visionary ideas, expertise and solutions. The call for cases and abstracts closes 17 April 2017.
"We made fantastic progress with Amsterdam International Water Week 2015, but with the 2017 edition, we will take that to another level", added Silvis on the occasion of the presentation of the programme outlines."The changes we are introducing for AIWW 2017 are an ambitious step, driven by the scale of the global water challenges but also the opportunities", Silvis concluded. "We look forward to the water community joining us next November and to achieving some real breakthroughs."
