Emeritus professor Bart Schultz wins world irrigation prize 2016

dws-icid-award-schultz2-770pxThe International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) announced that Unesco-IHE emeritus professor Bart Schultz has won the second World Irrigation and Drainage Prize.

ICID selected Dutch professor Bart Schultz to receive the award for his, “sustained, long standing and highly committed work to irrigation and the drainage sector worldwide, through education, research, planning and international project implementation”.

Recognized global expert
Unesco-IHE emeritus professor Bart Schultz is recognized as a global expert on irrigation, drainage and lowland development.

In his illustrious career with Unesco-IHE, spanning over 30 years, he was responsible for education and research in Land and Water Development.

Under his guidance around 200 overseas participants obtained at Unesco-IHE their Master of Engineering degree (MEng), 190 participants their Master of Science degree (MSc) and 15 participants their PhD degree.

Champion technology transfer
In addition to his part time appointment at Unesco-IHE, Schultz was top advisor at the national water authority Rijkswaterstaat until December 2009.

Additionally, as a champion of technology transfer, government departments around the world benefitted from the professor's expertise including those of Indonesia, Estonia, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, India, Pakistan and Central Asia.

Responding to the announcement rector ad interim Fritz Holzwarth at Unesco-IHE said, "I would like to cordially congratulate Professor Schultz on this well-deserved award for his exemplary contribution to the field of irrigation and drainage worldwide.

Recognition like this serves to remind us, here at the Institute, of the calibre of unmatched talent and dedication we are privileged to host and to foster".

The prize will be awarded at the opening ceremony of the second World Irrigation Forum on 6 November 2016 in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
