In 2015 the Lifetime Achievement Award went to founder of the Community led total sanitation (CLTS) foundation, Dr. Kamal Kar (second right).

Modified pit latrine
Sasha Kramer (on top photo - testing compost to grow crops in Haiti) developed EcoSan latrines that store human waste in removable 15-gallon drums for composting. This compost can be used to make soil more healthier and improve the livelihood of many people that depend on small scale farming.

Maybe everyone’s toilet should have such a modified pit latrine, Kramer once said.

Kramer co-founded the non-profit organization Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods (soil) to build and manage latrines on Haiti.

Soil, together with its partners, also manages compost centers and vegetable gardens and they give sanitation workshops in Port au Prince.

Nominated young entrepreneurs
For the Sarphati Sanitation Award for Young Entrepreneur, three promising initiatives were selected and representatives of all three initiatives will be invited to the award ceremony. The three selected nominees are:
● Catherine Kisamwa, Sidian Bank Kenya
● Ahijit Banergy, Finish Society India
● Andrew Foote, Sanivation Kenya
The winner will be announced during the Opening Ceremony of the Amsterdam International Water Week.

About the Sarphati Sanitation Awards
World Waternet, Netherlands Water Partnership and Aqua for All initiated the biennial Sarphati Sanitation Award in 2013 to honor the outstanding contribution of individuals or organizations to the global sanitation and public health challenge through entrepreneurship.

In 2015 it was decided to make two Prize Categories and the CLTS Foundation was awarded for Lifetime Achievement in the creation of demand for sanitation. As for the Young Entrepreneurs category, SafiSana was rewarded.

The award is named after Dr. Samuel Sarphati, a doctor who contributed to the cholera free status of the City of Amsterdam as far back as the end of the nineteenth century.
