Holland contributes to Singapore water week with three top experts on urban water management
Deltacommissioner Wim Kuijken will be one of the key note speakers at the Singapore interantional water week. Kuijken will share the Dutch experiences on the event's theme water planning for liveable and sustainable cities.
Other Dutch water experts with major contributions are professor Mark van Loosdrecht of the Technical University Delft. He is the winner of the Lee Kuan Yew Water Price. Director Jonathan Clement of PWN Technologies will lead a panel discussion on future urban water supply.
Urban water management
The Singapore International Water Week will be held from July 1 till 5. The main theme of the event is Water solutions for liveable and sustainable cities. The event is organized under the supervision of Singapore’s Ministry of the Environment & water resources and PUB – Singapore’s National water agency.
Water leaders summit
One of the pillars of the event is the Water Leaders Summit where invited leaders from the government, industry and international organizations will discuss global water issues. One of the invited persons to address the summit, is Deltacommissioner Wim Kuijken from the Netherlands.
Long term climate adaptation strategy
Kuijken is appointed by the Dutch government to lead the Deltaprogramme to come to a long-term plan for increasing the flood protection and secure the fresh water supply.
At the summit Kuijken will refer to the Delta Act that came into force in January of this year. This act is the juridical basis for the long term climate adaptation strategy by the Netherlands. (Water Leaders Summit on July 3)
Depletion of water resources
Another programmed speaker is Jonathan Clemen, director of Technology application for PWN Technologies. Clemet will chair a panel discussion on integrated water & waste water management (Water convention - delivering water from source to tap on July 3).
Harvesting rainwater
"Our major challenge is to harvest the water inside the city", Clement says in an interview with the organizers of the Singapore water week. "The last twenty years we developed water technology to take out any contamination we want. The challenge now is to make water treatment more environmentally friendly".

Lee Kuan Yee water price
Highlight of the Singapore International Water Week is the hand out of the Lee Kuan Yew Water Price. This year’s winner has already been announced and is the Dutch professor Mark van Loosdrecht. He is awarded the Lee Kuan Yew water price because of for his breakthrough contributions in creating sustainable solutions in the field of wastewater treatment (Award ceremony on July 2).
Energy efficient nitrogen removal
By pioneering with biological water treatment process, Van Loosdrecht has been able to develop the newly discovered Anammox-bacteria into an energy efficient waste water treatment process to remove nitrogen. Aside from Anammox, he is also credited with the development of successfully introduced biological waste water systems as Sharon, Nereda, Canon and Babe.
Second Dutch scientist
Van Loosdrecht is the second Dutch water technology scientist to win the prestigious Singapore water price. The first Dutch scientist was Gatze Lettinga of University Wageningen. He won the prize in 2009.

The Dutch water sector will be present at the Singapore water week with a national pavilion where over 15 companies will show their latest products and services.
PWN Technologies will give a presentation of its award-winning Six and Ceramac technologies at the demoplant at Choa Chu Kang Waterworks on July 3.
