SIWW 2016: Watershare launched Community of practice on emerging substances
Watershare has launched its first Community of practice, which is dedicated to emerging substances, at the Singapore International Water Week.
Prior to the launch, the Watershare members held a workshop on 8 and 9 July, which was hosted by Singapore's national water agency, PUB.
Watershare is an international knowledge platform for 17 water research institutes. The platform shares 23 tools to help end-users to improve their water supply.
The new CoP in emerging substance is the first of five thematically groups that Watershare will form.
The workshop on emerging water pollutants is attended 35 experts from 6 different countries.
Efficiency of removal processes
Topics that were discussed at first workshop included monitoring and efficient removal of chemicals that have not previously been detected - or were previously found in far lesser concentrations – of which the risk they pose to human health and the environment is not yet fully understood.
The workshop participants from six different countries also exchanged information on the various analytical lab methods, both chemical and microbiological, they use to determine the substances.
Additionally there were presentations on the implementation of the AbatES tool and prioritization schemes for emerging substances.
Dr Lim Mong Hoo, Chief specialist of the water quality office at PUB Singapore addressed the workshop.
Lively discussions on hot topics
Dr Lim Mong Hoo, Chief specialist of the water quality office at PUB Singapore, declared that his organisation was very happy to host the 35 participants of the Community of Practice Emerging Substances. “This initiative serves the common interest of the scientific community, regulators and the water sector”, he said.
Annemieke Kolkman (on top photo), researcher and manager of KWR’s chemical laboratory, expressed her enthusiasm about the possibilities of using the Watershare platform to share experiences and learn from each other; for example, by comparing (analytical) methods and instruments.
Idsart Dijkstra, head of Water quality and health at the Dutch water research institute KWR, noted that no better moment could have been chosen for the launch than the SIWW 2016.
“Water experts were clearly in search of a lively platform concerning emerging substances where they could share their knowledge and experience”, he said.
AbatES is one of the 23 tools in the Watershare Suite with all relevant data for decision making on emerging substances.

These tools are made available via the online Watershare Suite that currently contains 23 tools for application in areas such as water resources, water treatment and distribution, water quality and health, and sustainability.
The research institutes can apply these tools with and for their end-users, such as water companies, utilities, municipalities and water boards.
