Water technology supplier Paques installed its 1500th Biopaq reactor at the DS Smith Kemsley papermill in the United Kingdom. The achievement was celebrated at the Paques booth at the Aquatech Amsterdam trade fair.

Aquatech Amsterdam is one of the mayor events of the Amsterdam International Water Week that takes place from 4 to 8 November.

Larger treatment capacity

Paques delivered two Biopaq IC anaerobic technology reactors for the treatment of the wastewater of the DS Smits’ papermill. The new reactors are more compact and have more capacity than the previous installation. Compared to the old aerobe treatment plant the new one produces 70 percent less sludge.

The biogas produced by the IC-reactors is fed into the natural gas grid after desulphurization of the gas by a Thiopaq-reactor. The installation has a daily gas capacity of 24,000 m3.

Boost for reduction carbon emissions

The refit boosts the carbon policy of the international paper producer that aims to reduce CO2-emissions per ton of production with 30 percent by 2030.

At the celebration of the landmark during the Aquatech Amsterdam trade fair, CEO Stephan Bocken of Paques remained of the fact that is was only five years ago that the company announced the commissioning of its 1000th Biopaq reactor. ‘No other company in the world is selling that large amount of anaerobic treatment systems for waste water’, he proudly claimed.

Quick payback time

Bocken considered the quick payback as an important success factor. ‘The reactors rank high so they have a small footprint and that is very attractive for our industrial clients.

'But above all' he added, 'the Biopaq reactor produces biogas that can be used as an alternative energy source and reduces the company’s energy bill significantly. Our high gas yield, is an important advantage'.
