Added value

Nereda from Royal HaskoningDHV is a patented aerobic granular sludge technology that originates from research at the Delft University of Technology. Compared to activated sludge technologies, the biological treatment power of Nereda is much larger, while saving up to 50 percent on energy costs, delivering high quality effluent for low costs and requiring only a quarter of the area of conventional activated sludge installations.

Currently, there are more than 89 sewage treatment plants in operation or under construction all over the world.

Although the first Nereda plants were delivered to industrial customers, Royal HaskoningDHV saw its more recent sales concentrating on the municipal market. With Nijhuis Saur oriented on the industrial water market, both companies see each other’s added value. The small footprint of the Nereda plant is an interesting point of sale for industrial customers that want to expand their production capacity but lack space for a bigger waste water treatment plant.

Game changer

CEO of Nijhuis Saur Industries, Menno Holterman emphasises that his company offers industrial clients the best possible biological solution and a wide product portfolio to reduce, reuse and recover. ‘Working together with experts of Royal HaskoningDHV on the industrial side creates an important partnership’, he adds.

‘Our respective teams have worked in collaboration over the last few months to be fully trained on the technology and define the common sweet spot where combining and integrating the Nereda technology in our smart Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Maintenance (DBFOM) solutions will become a real game-changer.’

Expanding on industrial market

Global Director Water René Noppeney of Royal HaskoningDHV sees the new partnership with Nijhuis Saur Industries as an excellent opportunity for its Nereda technology to expand further into industry.

‘Industrial wastewater treatment is an area we are keen to develop and further increase our presence’, Noppeney explains. ‘With Nijhuis Saur Industries we have a formidable partner in this sector. We look forward to working closely together in the European market.
