The Nitrate app developed by Deltares has won the Water Europe Digital Water Award 2020. A panel of Water Europe Ambassadors praised the high potential of the app and its ability to share the measured nitrate concentrations in surface waters immediately in the online Delta Data Viewer.

All six winners of the Water Europe Innovation Awards 2020 were announced during the digital innovation week organised by Water Europe from 22 to 26 June.

Deltares developed the Nitrate app especially for farmers and citizens to share data on the nitrate concentrations in small water courses. High nitrate concentrations are often found in surface waters areas with intensive agricultural activities. The high nitrate concentrations lead to algae blooms and to pollution of ground water.

The app gives the user the option to see the immediate result of the measurements. By holding a test strip in the water, the strip takes on a certain colour that can be compared to a colour legend. The app scans the colour differences and immediately displays the nitrate concentration.

For the Dutch user the special option has been developed to share the measured data with the Delta Data Viewer, a online database where all nitrate measurements are displayed and assessed against the local standards from the Water Framework Directive.

The app can be downloaded for free and the user is charged a small amount per measurement and for a set of test strips.
