The Salinity Magazine, published by the Netherlands Food Partnership and the Netherlands Water Partnership, addresses the pressing global issue of salinity, which is increasingly affecting freshwater resources and posing a threat to food security. It is an informative magazine containing a mix of background articles, interviews, and information on the international network working on salinity issues. The first issue of Salinity Magazine made its debut at a well-attended side event organised by the Netherlands on the topic of salinity and saline agriculture during the two-day high-level hybrid event entitled Towards a High-Level Dialogue on the Global Framework on Water Scarcity in Agriculture (WASAG), which was hosted at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) headquarters in Rome. The first ‘Salinity Magazine’ was presented to Dr Lifeng Li, Director of the FAO Land and Water Division, by Ambassador Marcel Beukeboom, Permanent Representative of the Netherlands to the Rome Agencies.

About the magazine

The Salinity Magazine explores the complex relationship between salinity, water security, and food production, challenges that are increasingly intensified by climate change. The magazine emphasises that while technology is vital, addressing salinity effectively requires a holistic approach that integrates natural water buffers, spatial planning, and cross-sector collaboration.

The publication showcases contributions from several international partners and highlights projects in countries such as Senegal and Bangladesh that demonstrate successful strategies and innovations for combating salinity and advancing sustainable agriculture. Among these is the COASTS project in Bangladesh, which is restoring 5,000 hectares of land through the use of salt-tolerant seeds, innovative technologies, and nature-based water management solutions. The project also supports the empowerment of female farmers, strengthening community resilience.

The magazine also features the work of various organisations, including Wageningen University & Research (WUR), that are actively addressing salinity-related challenges. Published by the Netherlands Food Partnership and the Netherlands Water Partnership, the magazine will release a second edition focusing on specific themes such as salt and groundwater issues.

This article is based on 'The first edition of the Salinity Magazine is out now', published by Netherlands Water Partnership (May 2024).
