Recent flooding in the Netherlands has proven the effectiveness of its Room for the River programme. The measures build over a 10-year period were stretched to their limits, and the Netherlands suffered tremendous damages but no casualties. This innovative government design plan involves a vast amount of measures from widening floodplains to building new levees, that give more room to the four main rivers that flow through the Netherlands. The concept has also been translated to situations abroad, through a process of dialogue and interactions with all actors involved.
