Engineering firm Royal HaskoningDHV has been announced as winner of the 2020 Global Water Awards for ‘Water Technology Company of the Year’ for its significant contribution to sector innovation.

Organised by publisher Global Water Intelligence (GWI) annually, the awards are presented in several categories to recognise and reward initiatives in the water, wastewater and desalination sectors that are moving the water industry forward.

Three technology achievements

Tom Scotney, editor from GWI explained the decision: ‘In 2019 Royal HaskoningDHV took giant strides in the transition to the circular economy as it led the way in resource recovery. It initiated the first large-scale production unit for its ground-breaking biopolymer product Kaumera Nereda Gum, while the firm scored impressive results with a new sludge digestion technology Ephyra, its Aquasuite software and digital twin solutions.’

Niels Schallenberg, Royal HaskoningDHV’s Global Director Water said that it is a huge honour to be recognised for their commitment to the sector. ‘We work closely with key partners across the globe and through our ongoing innovations we aim to achieve our vision for water through water reuse, resource recovery, energy gain – all virtually operated. Ultimately, helping us to enhance society together.’

Weekly online announcements

The awards are always handed out at GWI’s annual conference that had been planned to take place in Madrid this year. Unfortunately, the event had to be cancelled because of the Corona pandemic. Instead, GWI is making weekly announcements of the winners in the 12 different categories online.

The winner in the category ‘Water Technology Company’, Royal HaskoningDHV, was announced on 24 September. One of the nominees included Dutch company Nijhuis Industries.

GWI will announce the winners of the last two categories – Desalination and Water Company – in October.
