In most parts of Kenya water is scarce. The country faces challenges like management of water reservoirs and infrastructure. More than half of the population has no access to drinking water and sanitation. Due to climate change floods more often occur in the country as well as periods of extreme drought. The development of the Kenya water sector directly effects the Kenya economy, the agriculture and lifestock breeding, the energy sector and the industry depent on a reliable water supply.

Kenya has a long-term strategic plan in which a Dutch Business Hub is included. Food certainty is integrated in the Business Hub. The plan provides a solid basis to include different Dutch-based organizations in the realisation of the plan.
