Benin has a relatively wet climate: therefore water is widely available. Though, Benin faces great challenges when it comes to water management: a seasonal lack of water, pollution of (ground) water and salinization. The urban drinking water system is well organized, but there are issues in planning, implementation and maintance of the infrastructure. About 40% of the population has no access to drinking water.

The Netherlands is one of the most important partners of Benin when it comes to water management. Both countries work together on developing integrated water solutions based on a long-term strategic plan. The Benin and Dutch Water sector collaborate in the Beninees-Dutch Platform. The platform provides strategic advice to come to a meaningfull watermanagement collaboration between Benin and the Netherlands.
