GLOWASIS

Providing access to water scarcity data

Posted on 1 January 2011

GLOWASIS

Deltares is coordinating the European GLOWASIS (Global Water Scarcity Information Service) project. GLOWASIS is part of the European Earth Observation Programme (GMES) which provides and combines Earth observation data from space, air, water and land through a sustainable information infrastructure. The GLOWASIS scientist and user community actively seeks interaction with related European and global research and development projects on water scarcity. Participating institutes are: Stichting Deltares, The Netherlands (coordinator); Consiglio Nazionale Delle Ricerche, Italy; European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts, United Kingdom; JRC – Joint Research Centre – European Commission, Belgium; Netherlands Geomatics & Earth Observation B.V, Netherlands; Universiteit Utrecht, Netherlands; Technische Universitaet Wien, Austria; TNO, The Netherlands; Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Spain; Instytut Meteorologii i Gospodarki Wodnej, Poland; University of Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa.

Goals

The main objective of GLOWASIS is to pre-validate a GMES global service for water scarcity information on both a European and a global scale. It will do so by combining hydrological modelling information with in-situ and satellite water cycle information, as well as statistical water demand data, in three pilot projects. Information will be presented and disseminated through an open source and open-standard web-based portal: a one-stop-shop for water scarcity information.

Impact

Besides serving the specific goal of streamlining and improving water scarcity assessment and forecasting information, GLOWASIS’ output will contribute to a variety of purposes, from near real-time reporting of emerging drought events to the provision of climate change time series. The system will thus help people and organisations take immediate action, make appropriate policy decisions and decide on necessary investments.
